Buy Steel Sheet and Plate Online

Custom-cut to Order Delivery or Click & Collect

Flat steel sheet and plate offer smooth, solid surfaces that are easy to cut, drill, weld and shape to your needs. Thinner sheets can be bent or folded for fabrication of panels, flashings and enclosures, while thicker plates deliver high load-bearing strength for structural components and wear parts. Special profiles like checker plate (floor/tread plate) feature raised patterns for slip resistance, making them ideal for walkways, ute trays and flooring. Thanks to steel’s high tensile strength and durability, a properly chosen sheet or plate will provide a reliable solution that stands up to heavy use.

At Edcon Steel, we stock an extensive range of steel sheet and plate products to suit jobs of any size. Our stock includes commercial mild steel in both 250 and high-tensile 350 grade, Galvabond and Zincanneal zinc-coated sheets for corrosion resistance, Corten WR350 weathering steel that develops a protective rust patina, as well as Colorbond pre-painted steel in popular colours. We also provide stainless steel (304/316 grades) and aluminium sheets through our comprehensive online catalogue. All steel sheet & plate items can be cut to your exact dimensions and are available for purchase online with Australia-wide delivery.

Order online for nationwide delivery, or visit one of our stores in NSW (Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, and Orange) for expert advice and local pick-up.

Work Smarter with Edcon Steel

Plan Your Cuts: Steel sheets come in standard sizes (like 2400 × 1200 mm). Planning your project around these dimensions can minimise waste and save cost. Before cutting, consider the layout of parts on the sheet to get the most out of each piece. Our team can help you plan efficient cuts so you only buy what you need.

Choose the Right Material: Select your sheet/plate material to suit the environment. For outdoor or coastal projects, opt for galvanised steel or stainless steel to prevent rust. Use Zincanneal if you need easy welding and painting (great for automotive panels), or Corten if you want a weathered look without sacrificing strength. We stock everything from basic mild steel to specialty grades, ensuring you get the best fit for the job.

Guard Against Rust: Mild steel will rust if unprotected, so be sure to prime and paint it or seal it after fabrication. Galvanized sheets have a protective zinc coating but remember to touch up any cut edges (which can be prone to corrosion). For ultimate longevity in wet or coastal conditions, stainless steel sheet offers superior corrosion resistance. Taking a little time to protect your steel will greatly extend its service life.

Pick the Proper Thickness: Ensure you choose an appropriate thickness (gauge) for your project’s needs. Thinner sheet (1–3 mm) is easier to cut and form, ideal for light-duty panels and enclosures, but may dent under impact. Thicker plate (6 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm+) provides far greater strength for structural support or heavy wear but will be heavier and costlier. Not sure what you need? Our staff can guide you – and remember, for any critical load-bearing application, consult an engineer to confirm the specs.

Check with a Professional: All information here is general. Always confirm your steel sizes and load requirements with a qualified engineer or builder before installation to ensure compliance and safety.

Common Uses and Sectors: Steel Sheet and Plate

Steel sheet and plate are some of the most versatile products in metal fabrication, valued across industries for their strength, reliability and ease of use. In construction, they’re used for flooring, cladding, roofing, baseplates, and structural components, while checker plate provides a safe, non-slip surface for stairs and walkways. In transport and automotive projects, sheet metal forms ute trays, trailer floors and vehicle panels, with thicker plate reinforcing chassis and heavy-duty parts.

For outdoor and marine use, galvanised, stainless or weathering steel resists corrosion and delivers long-lasting performance in everything from water tanks to architectural features. In industrial and fabrication settings, plate steel is essential for machinery, tanks and equipment repairs, offering exceptional weldability and durability. Even in home DIY and creative builds, steel sheet and tread plate are popular for benches, ramps, garden edging and custom furniture, providing a strong, practical and easy-to-work material for almost any project..

Can I buy half sheets or small cut pieces of steel plate?

Yes. You don’t need to buy a full sheet. Edcon Steel can cut steel sheet and plate to any size you require – half sheets, quarter sheets or custom sizes – at our Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, and Orange stores, or you can order custom sizes online for fast delivery anywhere in Australia. You only pay for what you need, helping to reduce cost and material waste.

What thicknesses of steel sheet and plate are available?

We stock a wide range of thicknesses, from light-gauge sheet around 0.55 mm up to heavy plate exceeding 25 mm. Sheet metal under 6 mm is ideal for cladding, ducting and fabrication, while thicker plate is suited for structural, industrial and wear applications.

Should I choose galvanised or stainless steel for outdoor projects?

Galvanised steel is a practical, cost-effective choice for outdoor and rural use, offering strong protection against rust. Stainless steel is ideal for coastal and marine environments where long-term corrosion resistance is essential. Both options are available in multiple thicknesses and finishes at Edcon Steel.

Do you sell steel tread plate for floors and ute trays?

Yes. Edcon Steel stocks checker plate and floor plate in mild steel, galvanised steel and aluminium. These non-slip plates are perfect for ute trays, trailer floors, factory walkways, ramps and access platforms.
