Custom-cut to Order
Delivery or Click & Collect

At Edcon Steel, we supply 1045 and 4140 grade chrome bars in various diameters to suit light, medium, or heavy-duty jobs. All stock can be custom-cut to your required length for convenience. This product has the same base material as 4140 peeled round bar but has the added benefit of a hard chrome surface. While Edcon does not stock chrome bar, we are able to source for you.

Chrome Bar is a high-quality steel round bar with a hard chrome plating, prized for its smooth finish and exceptional durability. In essence, it’s a steel bar (typically 1045 medium carbon or 4140 high-tensile alloy) that has been peeled/ground to size and then electroplated with chromium, creating a tough, low-friction surface. This chrome coating provides improved wear resistance and defends against corrosion, making chrome bar ideal for applications where a hard, slick surface is critical. The profile is usually circular (round bar) with a precision-ground finish, although small square profiles (known as key steel) are also available for specialist uses like machine keyways.

Chrome bars offer professional builders, engineers and machinery repairers a reliable solution for hydraulic rams, piston rods and linear guides, while being accessible to DIY enthusiasts working on automotive restorations or custom projects. The bars are strong yet machinable, and the chromed layer reduces friction, helping hydraulic seals last longer and components move smoothly.

Work Smarter with Edcon Steel

Plan Your Lengths: Chrome bar is typically supplied in 6 m lengths. Designing around standard lengths helps reduce waste and costs.

Protect Against Corrosion: Chrome plating offers good rust resistance, but the base steel is not stainless. For outdoor or wet environments, lightly oil the surface and protect any exposed cut ends.

Choose the Right Grade: 1045 chrome bar suits most general-purpose applications, while 4140 is better for higher loads and impact resistance.

Cut and Machine Safely: The hardened chrome surface requires suitable tools and PPE when cutting or machining. Deburr cut ends to remove sharp edges. If you don’t have the right equipment, we can cut and prepare your bars accurately and safely.

Check with a Professional: All information here is general. Always confirm your steel sizes and load requirements with a qualified engineer or builder before installation to ensure compliance and safety.

Common Uses and Sectors: Chrome Bar

Chrome bars are indispensable in many industries thanks to their combination of strength and a super-smooth, hard surface. In the construction and civil works sector, chrome-plated rods serve as hydraulic cylinder shafts in excavators, bulldozers, cranes and other heavy equipment. The mining and agricultural industries similarly rely on chrome bar for hydraulic rams on machinery like tractors, harvesters, and drilling rigs, where durability and reliability are a must.

In manufacturing and industrial maintenance, chrome bars are used as linear guides, machine slides, and press rods, providing precise movement and long service life in everything from factory automation equipment to plastic injection molding machines. They also appear in transport and automotive applications, such as shock absorber shafts, fork stanchions on motorbikes and in custom car builds or restorations (steering shafts, pneumatic lifts). The hard chrome surface reduces friction and prevents galling, which is crucial for any moving metal-to-metal contact.

For residential or DIY projects, you might find chrome bar handy in specialised builds like home-built hydraulic presses, fitness equipment, or even artistic and furniture pieces that call for a sleek industrial metal look.
