Buy Steel Purlin Online
Custom-cut to order
Delivery or Click & Collect
At Edcon Steel, we stock a full range of C and Z purlins in various sizes and gauges, made from high-tensile galvanised steel for long-lasting performance. Our purlins are cut to length and ready for residential, commercial, industrial and rural projects.
Steel purlins are horizontal beams used to support roof and wall sheeting in steel-framed buildings. Roll-formed into C and Z profiles, they offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios – strong enough to handle roof loads, yet light and easy to install. The open profiles make them ideal for bolting to rafters or wall frames, with Z-purlins able to lap for added structural efficiency.

|
Specification |
Details |
| Profiles Available | C-Section (Cee purlins with flat back) and Z-Section (Zed purlins with offset flanges). Both profiles include return lips for added rigidity. |
| Section Size Range | Depth (Height): ~100 mm (smallest) up to 350 mm (largest).
Standard sizes include 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 mm sections to suit various spans. Flange & Lip: Flange widths from ~40 mm up to ~100 mm (proportional to section depth), with ~15–25 mm stiffening lips for strength. |
| Thickness / Gauge | Base metal thickness from 1.0 mm (lightest gauge) up to 3.0 mm (heaviest), depending on section size. This corresponds to approx. 2.0–9.0 kg per metre of purlin (higher for larger sections). Lighter gauges suit smaller spans; heavier gauges support greater loads.* |
| Material Grade | Cold-formed, high-tensile structural steel (typically minimum 450 MPa yield strength). Complies with AS/NZS 1594 & AS 1397 for G350–G450 galvanised steel coil. Offers excellent strength and ductility for construction use. |
| Standard Lengths | Common stock lengths include 6.0 m and 9.0 m. Longer lengths (up to ~12 m) available or made to order. We provide custom cutting to any length: Get exact sizes cut for your project with no waste. Full-length or cut pieces, you only pay for what you need. |

Finish / Coatings |
Pre-Galvanised (standard): Zinc-coated steel (minimum Z275) for durable rust protection edconsteel.com.au.
Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG): Optional extra galvanising after fabrication for heavy-duty outdoor protection (covers cut edges/welds) edconsteel.com.au. Primed (Painted): Optional industrial primer (e.g. zinc phosphate) for temporary corrosion protection and ready-to-paint surface. Plain (Uncoated): Mild steel purlin (by request) if you require a bare finish for custom coating. |
| Standards | Manufactured to AS/NZS 4600 (Cold-formed steel structures code) and steel to AS 1397 (zinc-coated sheet steel spec). All Edcon purlins meet relevant Australian Standards and can be supplied with material certificates on request. |
Table Notes: Dimensions and weights are typical values – slight variations may apply by manufacturer. Standard stock depth range is 100–300 mm; 350 mm available to order. Contact us for any sizes outside the listed range.

Work Smarter with Edcon Steel
Plan Your Lengths: Purlins are typically stocked in 6 m and 9 m lengths. Designing around these can reduce waste. Need something different? We’ll cut to your exact size.
Protect Against Rust: Our galvanised purlins resist corrosion, but if you cut or drill them, seal exposed edges with cold-gal or primer. For coastal areas, choose hot-dip galvanised for full protection.
Plan for Delivery: Short lengths can ship by courier or post. Longer or bulk orders go via our trucks (Sydney) or national freight. We deliver daily in metro and regional NSW.
Store Safely: Stack purlins flat, dry and off the ground to avoid bending or surface rust. Good storage keeps them ready to install.
Check with a Professional: Always confirm sizes, spans and loads with a builder or engineer. Correct sizing ensures your structure is safe and compliant.
Common Uses and Sectors: Steel Purlin
Steel purlins are essential in both light and heavy construction. In residential and commercial builds, they support roofing and wall cladding in carports, garages, sheds, and warehouses. C-purlins are often used for simple framing, while Z-purlins allow overlapping and longer spans, which is ideal for larger structures.
Purlins are also widely used in industrial and infrastructure projects like factories, logistics hubs, and farm buildings. Their high strength-to-weight ratio makes them perfect for efficient roof and wall systems, especially where cost-effective framing is critical.
With galvanised finishes, purlins perform well outdoors and in rural environments. They’re a top choice for barn roofs, equipment shelters, and large sheds exposed to the elements.
