RHS Steel – Rectangular Hollow Sections

At Edcon Steel, we stock a wide range of rectangular hollow sections (RHS) to suit projects big and small. Our RHS are generally made from high-quality structural mild steel (350 MPa grade), ensuring reliable performance in load-bearing applications and compliance with Australian Standards. Customers can choose from bare (mill finish) steel, primed (painted) sections, and even galvanised options for robust corrosion protection. Every RHS can be cut to size to your exact requirements, so you only purchase what you need.

Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS) are steel tubes shaped with a rectangular cross-section. They feature flat sides and a hollow centre, giving them excellent strength-to-weight ratio and stability under load. This shape makes RHS a versatile structural section; strong in both horizontal and vertical orientations, while the flat surfaces are easy to weld, bolt, or attach to other materials. RHS is popular with builders and DIYers alike for its combination of strength and relatively lightweight form.

Key Specs & Options: Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS)

Specification

Details
Dimensions (H×W) ~50 × 20 mm (smallest typical RHS) up to ~250 × 150 mm (largest standard stock). Even larger sizes can be sourced by special order if required.
Wall Thickness ~1.6 mm up to ~9.0 mm wall thickness, depending on size. (Common RHS sections have 2.0–5.0 mm walls; thicker sections are used for heavy structural jobs.)
Material Grade Structural mild steel Grade C350 (350 MPa yield strength) is standard for our RHS. Stainless steel (304/316) and aluminium alloy 6060-T5 RHS are available by request for specialized applications.
Standard Lengths Most RHS profiles are stocked in 6.0 m standard lengths for easy handling. Some large sections may come in 7.5 m or 8.0 m lengths. We custom-cut to any length you need (minimum cut as small as 15 mm), so you can order exact lengths rather than full bars.
Finish & Coatings Mill Finish (raw steel): Bare, uncoated steel as rolled (can be painted or primed as needed).
Primed/Painted: Supplied with a shop primer (paint) coating to protect against surface rust and ready for your top coat.
Pre-Galvanised: Selected RHS sizes are available in zinc-coated steel for corrosion resistance (ideal for smaller sections and indoor/outdoor use).
Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG): For ultimate protection, we can arrange post-fabrication galvanising on your RHS – the section is dipped in molten zinc for a heavy-duty protective coat, inside and out.

Standards

Edcon’s RHS profiles are manufactured to AS/NZS 1163 (Australian Standard for structural steel hollow sections) and related standards. All stock meets Australian quality requirements and can be supplied with material test certificates on request.

Work Smarter with Edcon Steel

Plan Your Lengths: Use standard 6.0 m lengths to reduce wastage where you can. Remember we can cut your RHS to any length you require, so you only buy what you need.

Custom Fabrication: Save time on-site by ordering RHS fabricated by our expert team. We can prepare your steel to spec, so it’s ready to install, no extra drilling or welding needed on your end.

Cutting & Bending: Plan your project with straight lengths in mind. Thick RHS is difficult to bend without specialist equipment, so for sharp angles it’s usually better to cut and weld sections rather than trying to bend them.

Storage: Store your RHS properly to maintain its condition. Keep steel sections off the ground and under cover to stay dry. If storing outside, try to cap the tube ends or cover them, as this prevents water from pooling inside the hollow section.

Check with a Professional: All information here is general. Always confirm your steel sizes and load requirements with a qualified engineer or builder before installation to ensure compliance and safety.

Common Uses and Sectors: Steel Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS)

Rectangular hollow sections (RHS) are trusted across construction, civil, residential and industrial projects for their strength, clean shape and versatility. In building and construction, RHS is ideal for framing, used in beams, columns, lintels, rafters and bracing in homes, sheds and commercial buildings. The rectangular profile offers directional strength and fits well into confined spaces.
In infrastructure and industrial settings, RHS supports bridge trusses, gantries, machinery frames and heavy equipment. Its closed shape resists bending and twisting, making it reliable under dynamic loads. In automotive and manufacturing, RHS is commonly used in trailers, truck frames and roll-cages.

For residential and DIY use, RHS suits everything from gate frames and furniture to pergolas and architectural features.

Edcon Steel supplies RHS across NSW through our Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, and Orange stores, with Australia-wide delivery also available.
