Drafting, fabrication and on-site welding: an impressive extension of a Federation home in Roseville

We spoke to Tom Wiley from TMW Constructions, the construction company responsible for an impressive extension of a Federation home in the leafy Sydney suburb of Roseville.

As long-term Edcon Steel customers, they partnered with the team at Brookvale, who not only supplied and delivered the steel for the project but completed the steel drafting, fabrication and some on-site welding for the addition.

The design

Situated in a heritage conservation zone, the contemporary two-storey addition was a rear extension, hidden from street view.

With the architectural design by Corban Architects and structural engineering by Bekker Engineers Design Buro, it was TMW Constructions – specialists in architectural residential extensions and new builds – that were engaged to bring the impressive design to life.

Featuring a ‘shipping container look’ that incorporates steel, timber and glass, the design offers a sleek, modern and polished space.

The project

High-strength HDG steel beams and columns were used to construct vast living spaces, featuring full-width opening doors to both the garden and courtyard.

“We used a fair bit of steel framing for the structure, then a timber framed light-weight construction on the outside,” Tom explains.

The wide expanse of the steel beams provides stability for the new streamlined structure.

A significant change to the rear of the house, the modern extension belies the quaint cottage-like street view of the home.
