Buy Steel Tophat & Battens Online

Custom-cut to order
Delivery or Click & Collect

At Edcon Steel, we stock a wide range of tophat battens to suit projects of all sizes and can cut them to length, making them ready for residential, commercial, industrial, and rural projects.

Steel Tophat sections and battens are lightweight cold-formed steel members shaped with a profile resembling a top hat. This unique shape (a flat top with vertical sides (brims) gives them excellent rigidity and strength relative to their light weight.

Typically made from high-tensile galvanised steel, tophat battens are an ideal alternative to timber purlins or battens, offering greater durability and fire resistance (they won’t warp, rot, or burn like wood). Builders and DIY enthusiasts alike use steel tophat battens for roof framing, wall girts, and ceiling support because they are easy to handle and install.

Key Specs & Options: Steel Tophat and Battens

Specification

Details
Profile Depth Range 22 mm (slim ceiling batten) up to 120 mm (deep tophat purlin). Common profiles include 22mm, 40mm, 64mm, 96mm, and 120mm depths to suit various span requirements.
Base Metal Thickness Typically, 0.42 mm (for lighter sections) up to around 1.0 mm BMT. Smaller roof/ceiling battens are thin and high-tensile, while larger sections use thicker steel for strength.
Material Grade Cold-formed high-tensile steel coil, conforming to AS 1397. Often G350–G550 grade (minimum yield ~350–550 MPa) for strong yet lightweight performance.
Coating & Finish Zinc-coated for corrosion protection. Available in galvanised (Zinc) steel or ZINCALUME® (aluminium/zinc alloy) finishes. Some sections can be primed or painted as needed for additional protection.
Profile Types Includes standard Top Hat sections (used as purlins/girts), roof battens (e.g. 40mm high for metal roofing support), and ceiling battens/furring channels (e.g. 22mm high for interior ceilings). All feature the characteristic “top hat” shape profile.

Stock Lengths

Standard lengths ~6100 mm (6.1 m) for most battens; larger profiles (e.g. 96, 120mm) stocked in 7500 mm or up to 9000 mm. Edcon Steel can cut to any custom length for you. Longer lengths may be available on request (transport limits may apply).
Availability Most tophat battens are supplied in pre-galvanized mild steel. We stock popular sizes and can source others quickly. Note: Not all sizes are held at every branch – please check stock with your local Edcon store.

Work Smarter with Edcon Steel

Cutting & Drilling: For clean cuts on light-gauge sections, use tin snips or a fine-tooth metal cutting saw. Edcon can pre-cut your battens to save time on site.

Corrosion Protection: All Edcon tophat sections come zinc-coated for rust resistance. For coastal or high-moisture areas, consider additional protective coatings.

Storage & Handling: Store battens off the ground and keep them dry to avoid moisture build-up. If they get wet, separate and dry them thoroughly with good airflow. Carry long lengths on edge for strength and take care around rolled edges, which can still be sharp.

Buying Custom Lengths: Edcon offers custom cutting on all tophat and batten profiles. Order exactly the lengths you need, ready for pickup or delivery. For large or non-standard sizes, just ask. We can often arrange longer lengths or special supply.

Check with a Professional: All information here is general. Always confirm your steel sizes and load requirements with a qualified engineer or builder before installation to ensure compliance and safety.

Common Uses and Sectors: Steel Tophat & Battens

Steel tophat and batten sections are used across a broad range of building applications. In construction, they commonly serve as roof purlins and roof battens, providing a stable base to fix metal roofing sheets or tiles. They also function as wall girts and façade supports, helping to carry cladding on sheds, warehouses, and factories.

Smaller top hat battens (like 22 mm profiles) are used as ceiling battens or furring channels for internal linings. In residential and light commercial projects, these sections are used in garages, carports, patios, and pergolas as part of the framing system. Their high strength-to-weight ratio makes them suitable for areas with higher wind loads or where timber would be less ideal.

Industries such as construction, rural building, and home improvement all rely on steel tophat & battens, from farm sheds in rural areas to new housing in Sydney.

Edcon Steel’s clients include professional builders and engineers, as well as DIY home renovators, all of whom benefit from the versatility of these products. Thanks to our branches across NSW (Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, and Orange) and efficient shipping, we cater to local projects and deliver steel battens Australia-wide, ensuring that customers in both urban and rural areas receive the support they need.
