DIY garden bed cover using Edcon Steel products

When George and his wife Lisa found themselves in lockdown in 2021, they decided to take on a project that had been in the back of their minds for some time.

George, a chef, was keen to plant a kitchen garden and make the most of his free time with a DIY garden bed cover.

The inspiration

“We were initially thinking of making garden beds and covering them with netting individually as, most people do,” George said.

“But you can’t really walk around and enjoy the garden when they are all covered like that.”

George knew he wanted to be able to walk around his garden while still protecting it from birds, possums and pests, but he didn’t have a clear idea about how or what he was going to build.

“I visited a few different stores to see if I could get an idea of ways to do it with steel tubing and the like, but I couldn’t get the right steel or connectors to fit,” George says. “That’s when Lisa suggested I try Edcon Steel in Brookvale.”

The project

After contacting Edcon Steel and realising they had the steel tubing products he needed in the correct sizes, George began constructing his garden bed cover.

“It was all trial and error really,” he says.

“I didn’t use any plans or anything like that, I had to just work with it on the fly.”

The team at Edcon was very helpful in determining the best products to use for his project.

“The whole process was so easy, it was great,” George explains.

“We just went down to the store, picked the products, and they were delivered.

The steel we got was easy to cut to size and was just perfect.”

A beautiful kitchen garden

“We grow everything, really,” George explains.

“We’ve grown a lot of tomatoes; Lisa grew pumpkins; we’ve had corn and other vegetables; we’ve even grown raspberries.

It’s great, because you can actually go into the garden and walk around without having to worry about lifting up each individual netting cover.

Once you’re in there, it’s perfect, and we really enjoy it!
