Bespoke creation for Sydney’s Phoenix Gallery: using Edcon’s brass products

Congratulations to Philip Sticklen, the winner of Edcon Steel’s latest projects competition for his fabrication of solid brass wash sinks, designed and created for the Phoenix Gallery in Chippendale, NSW.

The Sydney-based designer and maker has been producing specialty pieces from his own atelier-style practice, Bespoke House, for more than 35 years. Self-trained, Philip creates bespoke furniture and architectural fittings, and now specialises in fabrication of brass products.

The project

In the leafy Sydney suburb of Chippendale sits the Phoenix Gallery, Judith Neilson’s $32 million private gallery and performance space.

Sydney architectural firm Durbach Block Jaggers (DBJ), along with Melbourne architect John Wardle, designed the breathtaking space, where architecture and interior design come together with the arts.

Familiar with Philip’s exquisite work, DBJ architects commissioned him to collaborate in the prototyping and production of solid brass sinks for installation.

With high lustre, brass was specified for its stunning appearance and premium quality.

“I love working with brass,” Philip says. “It’s soft and you can actually work it with woodworking tools. As a cabinet maker to start with, I got into brass because it’s a really appropriate material for fittings.”

With his workshop just a short distance from the Edcon Brookvale store, Philip knew exactly where he needed to go to source the highest quality brass products for the project.

“I moved over this way three years ago, and I’ve been going to the Brookvale store since then,” Philip says. “The team there are really helpful. They know their product and they’re quick off the mark to assist with any order.”

He selected Edcon Steel’s 6” x ⅜” (152.4 x 9.53) solid brass flat bar and 2.5mm brass sheet/plate for the project, creating a sink worthy of display in the gallery itself.

The final product

With beautiful curves and lustre that will only get better with age, Philip’s striking metallic creation adds luxury to the space.

“It’s such a unique final product,” Philip says.

“The curve, which was a bit of a challenge during the fabrication process, is the nicest thing about it, I think.

The final product is a really clean, functional item and the materials are the best you can get. It will really improve with age.”
