Each of our stores has its unique specialty, thanks to our team’s wealth of experience across different industries. Our vast knowledge of steel and metal fabrication combined with our workforce’s longevity is what makes Edcon truly special.

“We have a number of staff members who have been with us for a long time. Four of our members have been with us for over 10 years, 10 members for over 15 years and four members for over 20 years, myself included,” says Michael Bevan, Edcon Steel Sales Manager.

“What’s really special about our team is that we’ve all come from unique backgrounds. For example, Matt was virtually straight out of school when he started with us as a storeman. Now, he’s the branch manager at Brookvale and he’s coming up to 10 years with us.

Helena has been with us for 12 years, and Anna in our head office has been with us for 10 years. Colin’s coming up to 15 years, Leo is entering six years and Daniel has been with us for close to four and a half years.”

“We also have staff who have previously worked in specialty metals. Some of our members have come from gas and welding suppliers, some are tradesmen and some are straight out of school and learnt everything right here at Edcon.… it’s such a rich variety. For example, Mick at our Revesby store has been with us for almost 19 years and he’s a fitter machinist by trade.

Many of our members came to Edcon from previous areas such as aluminium, fencing and cabinet making. This means that our branches rely on each other for advice, depending on who has the experience required to answer a question. For instance, someone from our Orange branch might ring Brett at Blackdown because he has 20+ years of experience with tool steels, or they might ring Adrian at Revesby for advice on welding gases because he has over 10 years experience at BOC gases prior to joining Edcon. 

It’s such a great feeling to know that there is someone within the company who has the knowledge that you need to tap into,” Michael adds.

For Michael, culture makes all the difference when looking at the longevity of Edcon’s workforce. And it’s one aspect of the business that he’s very grateful to experience.

“Edcon began as a family business with a small-business attitude. And it’s still a big part of who we are. No one is ever behind a closed door. If the Managing Director comes in, you can always have a chat with him. Whether someone walks past or visits one of the branches, we have an open door culture.

All of our directors work in the business full-time, so our employees feel comfortable talking to them. Our management team always takes the time to know their staff, their interests and show that we appreciate our team,” says Michael.

Our staff members are skilled in all aspects of steel and metal fabrication – so we really know metal. Our range includes structural steel, steel profiles, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, specialty steels, builders’ steel and associated metal products… and our team members are extremely knowledgeable about our products.

It’s this dedication to our product range that Michael also believes is what sets Edcon apart from the competition.

“The roles in our team are very unique compared to a lot of other companies. Our counter staff aren’t just servicing our customers or dealing with one type of product; they have a wide knowledge on thousands of products. In other steel companies, that’s just not always the case.

It’s no exception for our team in the warehouse. They don’t just pick the materials and put it in the truck; they also spend a lot of time having interactions with our customers. I know all of the directors really appreciate everyone’s hard work and commitment to giving their best,” Michael adds.

“I’m proud to see how Edcon has grown over the years. I love seeing everyone coming to work and caring about our team and our customers. I’m proud that we treat everyone with respect and do the right thing by everyone.”
