Supporting the WorldSkills Competition

Edcon Steel is proud to be partnering with TAFE NSW – Ultimo to support the 2021 WorldSkills Competition.

The biennial competition sees apprentices, trainees and students from around Australia competing in a series of exciting challenges for a chance to win gold, silver or bronze and become Australia’s national champion in their chosen vocational skill.

With more than fifty trades and skills represented, industry experts design the competitions to assess participants’ knowledge, practical competence and employability skills against a set of strict criteria.

The 2021 National Championships will feature regional winners from around the nation, with competitors showcasing their skills on the national stage at the highly anticipated 2021 WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show.

A challenging project

Edcon Steel will be providing the consumables for the Fitting competition, which falls under the Manufacturing and Engineering Technology umbrella of events.

This year’s competition will see eleven apprentice fitters, between the ages of 16 and 23, complete a challenging project with nearly 150 components.

The drawings and documentation provided to competitors contains specific information, which competitors must interpret and apply to their competition item using the skills and knowledge they have learnt at TAFE and through their employment.

Exceptional planning ability, practical skills and attention to detail will be what sets the top competitors apart.

A test of skill

The Fitting competition will consist of a range of tasks that will test practical and planning skills. Competitors will be judged on their use of the lathe and milling machine, well as their marking out ability and hand skills.

Tasks will include:

  • Reading and interpreting drawings
  • Marking out features
  • Working in a safe manner
  • General machining
  • Taking measurements and making calculations
  • Reading charts and instructions
  • Drilling, reaming, tapping holes
  • Using hand tools
  • Calculating gear ratios
  • Fitting seals and various types of bearings
  • Silver soldering
  • Fitting and aligning gears and pulleys
  • Demonstrating basic fitting techniques for assembly, including precision assembly.

Supporting the industry’s future leaders

Edcon Steel is proud to be joining a large community of industry experts in supporting Australia’s apprentices and trainees, who may one day lead our industries.

Almost everyone involved in the WorldSkills competition is a volunteer and welcomes the support of those within the industry.
