Structural Galvanised Steel

Galvanised structural steel is designed for long-lasting performance in outdoor and corrosive environments. At Edcon Steel, we offer both pre-galvanised stock and custom galvanising services to suit your project requirements.

What’s Available:

  • Selected products in SHS, RHS, CHS, and flat bar ranges are available pre-galvanised
  • All other structural items—such as beams, columns, channels (PFC/C sections), and angles—can be hot-dip galvanised post-fabrication

Our Hot Dip Galvanising Process

Transport to galvanisers

The team at Edcon Steel cut, drill, and/or fabricate your steel to order before transporting off-site for hot-dip galvanising.

Pre-work and Preparation:

When the structural steel arrives at the galvanisers, it is carefully inspected before degreasing, where any oil, paint, dirt, or rust is removed using solvents or alkaline cleaners.

The steel then undergoes the pickling process, in which it is soaked in a mild acid (typically hydrochloric acid) to remove rust and mill scale.

The steel is then rinsed to wash off the acid residue and dipped in a zinc ammonium chloride solution to prevent further oxidation before galvanising (a process known as fluxing).

Hanging and Jigging:
The structural steel products are then suspended using wires, hooks, chains and/or lifting frames. Jigging refers to hanging the products on a custom or reusable metal frame or fixture (a “jig”) that holds parts securely, often designed to carry multiple items at once in a balanced way.

Hot Dip Galvanising

The structural steel is dipped into a bath of molten zinc (around 450°C), where the zinc reacts with the steel’s surface to form zinc-iron alloy layers with an outer coating of pure zinc.

Zinc is highly corrosion resistant, so this coating acts like a shield, protecting the steel underneath from moisture and oxygen.

Quenching

After being removed from the molten zinc bath, the galvanised steel is rapidly cooled in a quench tank. Quenching involves dipping the hot steel into a water-based solution, sometimes containing additives like sodium dichromate or passivation agents.

Stacking and Collating

Once the steel is quenched (or air cooled), each piece is removed from the hanging jigs and inspected, with checks for coating thickness, coverage, and finish. The steel is then stacked on pallets or racks, often with timber spacers to prevent damage, before being collated into job-specific bundles (based on the original steel fabrication order).

Transport to Edcon Steel

The completed, corrosion-protected product is returned and ready for pickup.

Turnaround Time:

Please allow 5–7 business days for post-fabrication galvanising. While this is not a same-day service, it ensures the whole surface, including internal welds and cut areas, is adequately treated.

Note on Usage Terms:

Terms like galvanised steel beams, galvanised columns, or galvanised C channels refer to standard structural sections that undergo this galvanising process, not off-the-shelf, pre-treated items.

If you’re unsure whether to choose pre- or post-galvanised options, our team can help you determine which is best for your timeline, budget, and application.
