Supporting the next generation of metalworkers

Year 10 Design and Technology works

At Edcon Steel, we love supporting the next generation, particularly when it comes to steel and metalwork.

We’ve worked with Michael Martin, the head teacher of Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) at Georges River Grammar, for some time.

We spoke to Michael about how he and other teachers are teaching students the skills they need for steel and metal work and the value of Edcon Steel’s support.

Year 10 Projects

Teaching kids the basics

“I’ve been a TAS teacher for nearly 30 years,” Michael explains.

“It’s a great subject because it teaches kids skills in so many different areas, from metalwork and woodwork to graphics, cooking and sewing.”

In the metalwork specialisation, the students learn all about the processes, skills and tools involved in the shaping and reshaping of metal.

“We always start off with a heavy focus on safety, as the students use a variety of machinery like lathes, milling machines, Magnabends, guillotines and saws.”

“Every student who goes through our metalwork course has to complete a number of safety tests. And they have to score 100% before they can use the machinery.”

Throughout the junior and senior years, there is a heavy focus on seeing how the variety of machines work independently, as well as how they work together in industry.

“We focus heavily on industry and how metalwork machines work with technology like 3D printing machines and computer programs,” Michael says.

HSC Shape nomination

Amazing student projects

While the junior years focus on establishing the foundational skills in metalwork, the senior years encourage them to use these skills and their creativity to pursue a project of their own choosing.

“In the junior years, we generally get the students to design, create and make a chair of some sort, whether that’s a dining chair, a garden chair or a kids chair – it’s their choice,” Michael explains.

In the later years, the students have much more control over what they choose to create. And the results are impressive.

“This year, two students were nominated for the Shape exhibition, one with a metal project and the other architectural, which features the best HSC major projects from Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Textiles and Design.”

The impressive metal project was a chaise lounge-style creation made from various steel and metal parts, like nuts and bolts, round tubes and tread plates.

Working with Edcon Steel

Edcon Steel has been the steel supplier for GRG for a while now, supplying large quantities of steel tube, square section and other steel products for the TAS and metalworking subjects. Recently, Edcon Steel supplied the school with three new welding tables.

“Edcon has been so helpful for this subject,” Michael explains.

“Not only do they source and supply so many products for the school and the students, they are incredibly helpful in providing advice.

They offer suggestions about what products or materials to use and what techniques might work best.

They’re great. Nothing is ever a problem for them.”
