Beginners guide to bronze

The latest edition of our beginner’s guide is all about bronze. Here, we delve into the key characteristics and diverse applications of this versatile material.

What is bronze?

Bronze is an alloy composed primarily of copper and often combined with around 12-15% tin. Other metals, such as aluminium and nickel, are often added to produce a range of useful properties, such as strength or machinability. Bronze has been used by civilisations worldwide for thousands of years. The Bronze Age, from around 2,000 BC to 700 BC, was a time of significant technological advancement when stone was replaced by bronze in tool and weapon manufacturing. Today, bronze continues to be an important material in various industries.

Characteristics of bronze

Durability and Strength:

Bronze is known for its durability, as it is much harder and more wear-resistant than pure copper. Adding tin or other elements increases its strength, making it ideal for applications that require materials to withstand heavy use, wear, or pressure.

Corrosion Resistance:

Unlike iron or steel, which rust when exposed to moisture and oxygen, bronze develops a protective patina when exposed to the environment. This natural coating helps prevent further corrosion, making it especially useful in marine environments and outdoor applications.

Malleability and Workability:

Bronze is relatively malleable, meaning it can be shaped and moulded into various forms. This is beneficial for creating intricate objects like sculptures, coins, and detailed machinery components. It can also be cast into moulds, making it ideal for mass production.

Alloying Variations:

The specific properties of bronze can be altered by adjusting the ratios of copper, tin, and other alloying elements. For example, phosphor bronze, which includes a small amount of phosphorus, is known for its excellent fatigue resistance, making it suitable for springs and bearings.

Colour and Aesthetic Qualities:

Bronze is famous for its distinctive reddish-brown colour, which can vary depending on its composition. When exposed to the elements over time, the surface of bronze develops a greenish patina, known as verdigris, giving it a unique, aged appearance. This is particularly appreciated in art and sculpture.

Bronze applications

Bronze is widely used in various industries for its sought-after characteristics and aesthetic appeal.

Engineering and Machinery: In engineering, bronze is used to make bushings, bearings, and gears, particularly in heavy machinery. Its self-lubricating properties and resistance to wear make it ideal for components that undergo constant friction. For example, Edcon customer Steve Matheson and his son Brendan used bronze as the bearings for turning components and tilting mechanism in their incredible handmade kaleidoscope.

Architecture and Construction: Bronze’s aesthetic qualities and resistance to corrosion make it a popular choice for architectural elements, especially in outdoor applications. Bronze is used to construct doors, window frames, and cladding. Its ability to maintain its appearance over time makes it suitable for use in iconic structures and monuments.

Electrical Components: While copper is the dominant material for electrical wiring, certain forms of bronze are used in electrical components, such as connectors, terminals, and switchgear. Bronze provides adequate conductivity while also offering enhanced strength and resistance to oxidation compared to copper alone.

Shipbuilding and Marine Applications: Bronze is extensively used in the marine industry because of its excellent resistance to corrosion, especially in saltwater environments. It is used to make propellers, shafts, and other components that are submerged in water. Bronze’s resistance to corrosion extends the life of ships and underwater structures, making it a preferred choice in shipbuilding.

Art, Coins, and Medals: Throughout history, bronze has been a preferred material for creating sculptures and artwork. Its workability, strength, and aesthetic qualities made it ideal for ancient artists and modern sculptors. The famous statues of Greek gods and Roman emperors were often cast in bronze. Today, many contemporary artists still use bronze for large-scale sculptures and monuments.
