Edcon Steel’s Order Dates & Delivery Tips for the Holiday Season

With the busy holiday season fast approaching, we want to help you plan ahead so that your steel and metal orders arrive in time. Whether you’re a builder wrapping up end-of-year projects or a DIY enthusiast eager to tackle home improvements during the break, getting your materials on schedule is crucial.

Australia Post and other freight carriers will be handling a huge volume of parcels in December, which can lead to delays if you leave sending items to the last minute. To make sure our customers across New South Wales and Australia receive their steel orders by Christmas, we’re sharing the recommended lodgement dates (the last dates to send out shipments) for the major delivery services we use. By following these guidelines and ordering a little early when possible, you can relax knowing your Edcon Steel delivery is on its way.

Order deadlines

For delivery by Christmas within Australia, we have based the Edcon Steel order deadlines below on Australia Post’s recommended lodging dates (for metro areas).

We recommend treating these dates as the last resort; whenever possible, try to place your Edcon Steel order a few days before the cut-off. This gives our team time to custom-cut and pack your items, and provides a buffer in case of any unexpected shipping delays.

Parcel Post (small orders): Place your order by Tuesday, December 20, for same-state deliveries, and by Wednesday, December 17, for interstate deliveries.

Express Post (small orders): Place your order by Monday, 22 December, for the fastest delivery in metro areas.

Courier Service: Place your order by Monday, 22 December (same-state deliveries via road freight).

These dates are recommended guidelines based on delivery by December 25. They exclude shipments going to or coming from Perth, Darwin, and Hobart, which require even earlier lodgement (small orders must be lodged by 10 December for regular post and 21 December for express post).

Custom Cuts & Large Orders

We receive a high volume of custom-cut requests each day. Our expert staff work hard to turn around cutting jobs quickly, but it’s first-come, first-served.

If you place your order earlier, it secures your spot in our cutting queue. Ordering at the last minute may leave us less time to saw and prepare your materials for dispatch. If you need custom lengths or specific cuts, try to place your order as early as possible in December.

Similarly, if you’re purchasing a large or bulky steel order, allow some extra preparation time. Moving heavy beams, sheet metal, and big bundles safely around our warehouse can take additional time, as we often need to use cranes or forklifts to load your items. Large orders may also ship via specialised freight instead of regular parcel post. Rest assured, we’ll get it done as fast and safely as possible. Just keep in mind that very large orders aren’t as quick to pack up as a small box of hardware. For sizable orders, it’s wise to plan for a bit of lead time so we can coordinate logistics and still meet the delivery cut-off dates.

Nationwide Delivery from Our NSW Stores

Every day, you’ll see our Edcon Steel truck fleet delivering orders around the Sydney metro area and the Central Western NSW region (Bathurst and Orange). If you’re near one of our locations, our own drivers may handle your delivery, and we’ll do our best to get your order to you by Christmas.

For customers ordering from outside our truck delivery regions, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We partner with reliable freight services to ship steel across Australia. Depending on the size and destination of your order, we use Australia Post Parcel or Express Post for smaller items, and courier services for larger or longer-length items.

Delivery to more distant parts of Australia (WA, the NT, Tasmania, or remote rural areas) might take a little longer, especially in December. Australia Post’s guidelines suggest sending those long-distance parcels earlier (around mid-December) to account for the extra transit time.

If you’re unsure, please don’t hesitate to contact our team, and we can recommend the best shipping method and timing for your location.

Bonus tip: If you’re a Sydney or NSW customer and you’ve missed the courier cut-off, you still have the option to pick up your order in person from one of our stores. We offer a convenient Click & Collect service; just let us know you’d like to collect at Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, and Orange, and we’ll prepare your order for pickup. This way, you can grab your steel and materials right up until our last trading day before Christmas, avoiding the wait for post altogether.

Order Early and Avoid Delays

Avoid last-minute delays and get your steel delivered in time. Whether you’re in Brookvale, Revesby, Orange or anywhere across Australia, Edcon Steel has you covered with custom cutting, expert service, and nationwide delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Edcon Steel deliver outside New South Wales?

Yes, absolutely! Edcon Steel’s online store delivers nationwide, whether you’re in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or anywhere else in Australia. We’ll ship your steel and metal products right to your door, no matter where you are. (Just remember that very remote or regional locations might take a little longer in transit.)

What are the Christmas shipping cut-off dates for delivery?

For most orders within Australia, aim to place your order by mid-December to be safe. Australia Post’s recommended last lodgement dates are around 19 December for interstate and 22 December for same-state shipments.

Will cutting my steel to size delay my order?

Only slightly, if at all. We perform custom cutting in-house at all our stores (Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, or Orange), and most orders are cut to size within one business day. During the busy holiday rush or for very complex fabrication jobs, it might add an extra day of processing. Our team works hard to complete every cut promptly without sacrificing accuracy, so the impact on delivery time is minimal.

Should large or bulk orders be placed earlier?

Yes! We highly recommend ordering large quantities or bulky items as early as possible. Big orders (for example, multiple lengths of structural steel or a bulk lot of steel plates) take longer to prepare and often ship via freight services that may have earlier cut-offs. Placing your order by early December is a good idea for large projects. This gives us plenty of time to cut, pack, and arrange the right transport so your items arrive on schedule.

Do you offer express or rush delivery?

Absolutely. We can ship orders via Express Post or courier services if you need them quickly. When you check out, choose the express shipping option, and we’ll use the fastest available method that can handle your order. Keep in mind that extremely heavy or oversized items might not be eligible for air express and could go by the fastest road freight instead. Either way, we’ll make sure to get your delivery to you as fast as possible.

Are Edcon Steel stores open during the holidays?

Our NSW stores will be closed on public holidays, that includes Christmas Day (Dec 25), Boxing Day (Dec 26), and New Year’s Day (Jan 1). Our opening hours during the holiday period are as follows: Monday 22 December - 8:00am - 4:30pm Tuesday 23 December - 8:00am - 4:30pm Wednesday 24 December - 8:00am - 3:00pm Thursday 25 December - CLOSED Friday 26 December - CLOSED Saturday 27 December - CLOSED Sunday 28 December - CLOSED Monday 29 December - 8:00am - 4:30pm Tuesday 30 December - 8:00am - 4:30pm Wednesday 31 December - 8:00am - 3:00pm Thursday 1 December - CLOSED Friday 2 December - 8:00am - 4:30pm Saturday 3 December - 8:00am - 12:00pm Monday 5 December - NORMAL TRADE HOURS RESUME

Can I pick up my order instead of having it delivered?

Yes, you can! Edcon Steel offers a Click & Collect service. If you prefer to pick up, just select “I will pick up my order” at checkout and choose your preferred location (Brookvale, Revesby, Blacktown, Bathurst, or Orange). We’ll cut and prepare your order, and then let you know when it’s ready to collect.

What if I order after the cut-off dates?

We’ll still process your order promptly and send it as soon as we can, but it may arrive after Christmas. Any orders placed after the recommended dates (or during the Christmas–New Year break) will be dispatched in the order they were received once our team returns in early January. In other words, if you miss the cut-off, you’ll still get your steel, it just might be in the first week of the new year instead of before December 25. We appreciate your understanding and will do everything possible to expedite late orders.
