Safe Loading Practices

At Edcon Steel, the safety of our customers, staff, road users, and the wider community is always our top priority.

One way we support this commitment is by educating our community on safe loading practices, helping to reduce the risk of injury when loading and unloading products from cars, utes, and trucks.

That’s why we’ve created this guide, to help you load and transport your Edcon Steel products safely and responsibly.

When purchasing products from Edcon Steel, it is common to have items that are heavy or longer than your vehicle. Overhang limits vary depending on the vehicle, so check our safe loading guide if you are unsure.

Safe Loading Area

While Edcon Steel takes every precaution to maintain safe store environments, customers are responsible for their own vehicles and loading practices. To protect yourself, avoid costly fines, and ensure the safety of yourself and those around you, it’s essential to follow Australian Road Rules and safe loading procedures.

Before loading, customers must ensure that:

  • The vehicle is completely stationary
  • The engine is turned off and keys are removed from the ignition
  • The handbrake is engaged
  • Any existing items in the vehicle are stabilised

Our staff will always take care when assisting with loading and aim to help you achieve a safe and legal load However, we cannot accept responsibility for any damage to your vehicle during this process, particularly when assistance is provided.

It is also important to ensure the surrounding area is safe for loading. Always park in a designated loading or parking zone and check for potential hazards before beginning. Stay alert to moving vehicles, forklifts and other activity in the area. Our car parks can be busy, so remain aware of your surroundings at all times and follow staff instructions.

Safe Lifting

Lifting products into a vehicle is one of the most common causes of injury in our industry, especially when items are large, heavy, or have sharp edges. Injuries can include sprains, strains, bruises, and cuts.

Safe lifting Checklist:

  • Check your surroundings before lifting or moving items
  • Plan where and how you will place items before lifting
  • Maintain a stable, wide base of support
  • Keep your back neutral and engage your core
  • Bend at the hips and knees when lifting
  • Avoid lifting items overhead where possible
  • Turn with your whole body, do not twist.

Securing your load

Driving with an unsecured load poses a danger to you and other drivers, and can result in significant fines and penalties.

In NSW, fines for unsecured and overhanging loads are a whopping $481 and the loss of three demerit points per offence! Regulations vary by state, so always check with local authorities for the most up-to-date information.

Safe loading is not complete until your items are properly secured!

Key tips:

  • Know your carrying capacity:ensure your load does not exceed weight limits for your vehicle or roof racks.
  • Use appropriate restraints:: Load chokers or ratchet tie-downs are essential to prevent movement.
  • Load strategically: Place heavier items at the bottom, with lighter items on top.
  • Secure tall or narrow loads: Use multiple restraints where needed
  • Prevent movement: Fill gaps to stop items from shifting during transport
  • Support flexible materials: “Floppy” loads should be supported or covered to keep them stable.

Remember, this is the drivers responsibility to ensure the load is safely secured and compliant with overhand limits before leaving.

Non-compliant Loads

Any load that exceeds Edcon Steel’s safe loading limits will be deemed unsafe and will not be loaded onto your vehicle by our staff. We may also refuse self-loading of non-compliant loads. If your load does not meet our safety requirements, we can offer:

  • Cutting services to resize materials for safe transport*
  • Delivery via our dedicated trucks*
  • A full refund for items that cannot be safely loaded**

FAQs

Why are safe loading practices important when transporting steel?

Safe loading reduces the risk of injury, vehicle damage, and accidents on the road. It also ensures compliance with Australian Road Rules and helps protect all road users.

What should I do before loading steel onto my vehicle?

Before loading, make sure your vehicle is stationary, the engine is off, the handbrake is engaged, and any existing items are stabilised. This helps create a safe environment for loading.

Am I responsible for how my steel is loaded and transported?

Yes. While Edcon Steel staff may assist with loading, customers are responsible for ensuring their load is safe, secure, and compliant with road regulations before leaving the site.

What are the risks of improper lifting when handling steel?

Incorrect lifting can lead to injuries such as strains, sprains, bruises, and cuts—especially when handling heavy or sharp steel products.

What is the correct way to lift heavy steel safely?

Use proper lifting techniques: maintain a stable stance, bend at the hips and knees, keep your back neutral, engage your core, and avoid twisting your body while carrying loads.

How should I secure steel in my vehicle?

Use appropriate restraints like ratchet straps, place heavier items at the bottom, fill gaps to prevent movement, and ensure flexible materials are supported or covered.

What happens if my load is unsafe or non-compliant?

Edcon Steel may refuse to load unsafe items. Alternative options include cutting materials to size, arranging delivery, or receiving a refund (excluding custom or cut orders).

Are there penalties for driving with an unsecured load?
