Sixta Feature Brassware

Over the past 20 years, Matt Daniels, owner of Sixta Feature Brassware, has built a reputation for his skill and expertise in the creation, restoration and replacement of brass work for Sydney’s leading Architectural and design professionals, including the restoration and replacement of brass work on Sydney’s most iconic heritage-listed buildings.

His new venture, Sixta Feature Brassware, is a culmination of years of experience and a passion for creating meticulously designed and fabricated custom brassware. We spoke to Matt about Sixta Feature Brassware and why Edcon Steel is his go-to for all his brass needs.

A wealth of experience

While Matt Daniels began his career in auto engineering, he soon moved into fabrication and has spent the last twenty years focusing on brass restoration and fabrication.

“Our business used to focus primarily on brass restoration for many of Sydney’s older buildings,” Matt explains.

“The main source of our work was for the heritage architects of Sydney, so I performed a lot of the brass refurbishment and brass replacement for sites like the Anzac Memorial, the Opera House, and Sydney Library.”

In 2017, however, Matt’s business took a new direction after a designer asked if he would supply custom-designed brass door hardware for a project.

Matt saw a gap in the industry for quality brassware products that were custom-made and locally produced.

“The primary way we separate ourselves from other businesses is that we’re the manufacturer. So we can give our clients the perfect sizes and products that fit their requirements rather than just buying something off the shelf,” he explains.

That’s our niche. All our products are Australian-made—designed, manufactured, and fabricated in our shop in Brookvale—which means we don’t have the delays some other businesses do when having products fabricated overseas.

“Our customers are generally architects, designers, builders, and homeowners who are trying to get that next-level finish…that level of details that you can’t get off the shelf.

Feature Brassware Products

All Sixta products are designed in-house, drawn up on CAD software and fine-tuned with meticulous attention to an item’s form and function. Brass allows Sixta to provide products that are durable and low maintenance, with outstanding longevity and aesthetic appeal.

What sets Sixta apart from other retailers is that all its products are designed and manufactured in its own factory, which allows it to offer clients variations to its product range to fit specific specifications.

“We have a range of feature brassware products on offer, it can be brass handles or hooks, cabinetry, rails or brackets. There’s quite a lot of products that fall into our product scope,” Matt explains.

We have a range of stock products in our showroom, so that customers can come in and touch and see the product, know the weight of the brass, and so on.

There’s so much stuff that’s being sold as brass that is actually just brass-plated, so it doesn’t last very long at all. We want our customers to be able to come in and really see our products and the quality of them.

Once a customer decides on products, we manufacture them in-house to meet their exact requirements. And we have quite a short turnaround, too. Most of our orders are completed within two to three weeks, from start to finish. So even though they’re not off-the-shelf items, it’s not a long wait.

Sourcing brass from Edcon Steel

When it comes to sourcing brass, that’s where Edcon Steel comes in.

“We buy all our brass in commercial length from Edcon Steel,” Matt explains.

These are generally big round bars, flat bars and angles. We primarily use the big rounds nowadays because that’s what goes through the machines.

The brass bars are then machined down to parts using our CNC machine, then obviously assembled together and fabricated into completed items.

Brass stock is notorious for being very hard to get and expensive. But Edcon Steel has always been a reliable supplier, and they hold quite a good stock range for us.

I’ve been working with Edcon for years and one of the biggest selling points for our business is that if we only need a small amount of brass, say, a meter or something, we can buy that without having to purchase a commercial length.

That makes a huge difference when you’re talking about a product that can cost a thousand dollars a meter.

They also have all the extras we may need for our products: nuts, bolts and the like.

I often get phone calls from people wanting to know where they can buy brass, and I always say, “Just go to Edcon.” They’ll cut it to size for you. It’s easy.”
